For those of you that joined us on a regular basis, I'm so glad that you do. You guys are so much fun and many, many of you have loved my past episodes over the years. Tell me something funny. So I'm going to start a new episode, or a new seasonal episode. Oh my gosh, here we go, a new weekly episode that is going to be fun with friends, and I'm really excited today because you guys have heard her. She's been on a couple of times doing her beauty hack and then also some of the stuff with her bridal, and she is on a celebrity makeup artist and she is so much fun. So I am so glad that you are with me today, hillary Clark, to kick this off. How are you, hi?

I know, we know we need a little bit of fun. I know you and I had talked behind the scenes a little bit and I am sure that you have got some great stories to share that are funny. In regards to the makeup world, and I'm going to be honest with you, prior to this I went online and I was looking at makeup fails and I was like, oh my gosh. I was like, wow, now I got to ask you because you deal with a lot of people and you do a lot of stuff and I'm never going to ask you who or why.

But I've got to ask you we can do a celebrity chat sometime. Yes, those that will allow me, yeah.

Absolutely, absolutely. But what is? Probably someone who walked in with makeup on and you were like, oh no, girlfriend, no, no, no, you tried not to laugh. Have you had that ever happen?

Speaker 2: 2:03

Oh my gosh, my answer is so boring. No, because I have people come to me, you know, other than my four year old niece. I mean, she does it all the time but she teaches me things too. No, because, you know, when I'm doing lessons, I so often ask people to come with their makeup on, as they normally wear it. Okay. So I am totally in a no judgment zone because I'm really sensing like, okay, she sees this, she sees this, she sees this. So I don't ever like see people that way. I have like that.

My filter is very different, but I do see some, just some wild, wacky things. I mean, you know they're. I love. One of my favorite things and one of the things that I love the most is watching older women, like in their 80s and their 90s, watching them do their makeup when they touch up, like at gallows and events and dances, because sometimes they can look a little crazy because they still put things where they used to when they were younger. But you get the gist of what they're trying to go for and I learn a lot of tips and techniques from them. So, yeah, makeup wise, I have so many funny stories to tell you, but I don't know I just I look at things with a different filter.

I love that, I really do. That is awesome because you're right, when somebody thinks looks amazing, you know to them, you know again, it doesn't matter as long as you feel beautiful the way you are. So, no, I totally get you on that one and that's it. And the more and more I told you this off off off air, the more and more I connect with you and do stuff. I just love you. Your heart is so big and in the right place and, yeah, and I know this is going to be a funny segment but, on that being said, I'm so glad that you actually went that direction in regards to that, because I just know who you are.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm still I'm not being spirited in some of those ways, but oh boy, there are some. There are some funny stories, because we can sometimes we can be a little like whoa. You know, especially in beauty, people can be mean to each other. But you know, everybody does what they do for a reason and they think it looks good and it's within their comfort zone, and there's always it's like getting to understand that comfort zone is really is really interesting to me, because that's what I always have to respect is like that's their comfort zone and like with some people they're using makeup to like reveal themselves, and other people are using makeup to hide and to recede. So makeup is like an armor for some and it's very revealing for others. So I really approach it like what are they trying to tell me? What does makeup mean to them?

It's intimate. It's an intimate thing, yeah.

Very, very intimate and I'm so, I'm so honored and I'm so grateful that my clients let me in in that way. I feel like I have a great responsibility to be really kind and just to really kind of meet them wherever they are.

I love it. I love it. That is awesome. Well, I know you said you had some funny stories. Last time you were on you had talked about you had to go to a Q-tip event and you don't know if it was Q-tip the rapper. Yes, Q-tip, the actual thing you use.

Oh my gosh. Yes, I could. Yes, oh, that one, that is one for the books. I can recap that really quickly for those of us that haven't heard, that are just joining, and haven't heard that other segment yes, there's this phenomenal makeup artist. Her name is Mali Roncall and she has a brand called Mali Beauty M-A-L-L-Y. Everybody should definitely check it out. She's amazing and I met her at a show that I was doing for Smashbox in LA and she was leading the show and I was one of the artists and she said wow, girl, you can do makeup.

Like we had to do things quick, quick, quick and for whatever reason, she liked me, liked my work, and her assistant contacted me and asked me to come to New York for a Q-tip, for an event for Q-tip. She said we're bringing in a crew, we're working on something for Q-tip and it's a big deal. And now, mind you, she works with Jennifer Lopez, she works with all of these major music celebrities. So I'm not like totally crazy for being a little confused here, but at the time I didn't know if it was like Q-tip the rapper or were we working on a music video. And he had like a lot of dancers, he had a lot of people. There was a big production, or like Q-tip, the earbud that you use in your ears or you're not supposed to use in your ears, my rather.

So I had no idea and I kept in for whatever reason. This was like in the early odds and I was just too shy to ask that question directly because I felt so lame because I didn't know. But I sent several emails, just kind of gently asking oh, what should I pack, what should I bring, how should I prepare? And from those questions I would be able to and disseminate and understand what we were doing. And the questions were helpful but didn't give me any answer.

So I showed up not knowing what it was, and it ended up being a big event for Q-Tip, the cotton bud, which was really cool because they flew in, established in celebrity makeup artists from all over the country and set us up in these little vignettes and said all you can use, and they gave us each a surprise look and they said all you can do for this look is you can only use Q-Tips, no brushes, no tools, no tweezers, no, nothing, just Q-Tips Go. And they had beauty editors coming through watching us. So it was like an on the spot challenge and it was really fun. So it was great. But, yeah, that one it's like every email that came back, it was like more vague. I literally packed and got on the plane, having no idea if I was doing a music video or something for a cotton bud.

That is so funny, and it gets to a point too, where you can't ask anymore. It's like seeing somebody five or six times and you can't ask them their name, because it's just been too many times yeah. You're like I can't ask their name now. It's like, and they know yours yeah.

Yeah, it was just ridiculous. It was so funny. So I'm going to actually have to send this to Mali, because I don't even think I ever told her. I run into her every now and then and she's delightful, she has a heart of gold. You should actually talk to her, miki, sometimes. I would love to have her on Absolutely Incredible.

That is so fun. That is so fun. Well, I know you get an opportunity to travel and work with a lot of different people and a lot of different industries, and so I know in these journeys you have had other situations or things that have transpired that have just left you going. Oh my gosh, you said you had a couple of stories, so I'm waiting.

Yes, ok, so our first one happens around Halloween and I'm working with a very well-known, very well-known client that was getting ready to go to a Halloween party this has been many years years ago and she was going as Elvira and we were doing the wig and we have the long black nails and we had the whole look going on and we had just we done everything. We just popped her nails on. Everything looks great. The last thing to do were the lashes, and so I pulled them out and I was getting ready to put them on her and she said oh, no, no, no, no, no.

I really love to do my own lashes, and I know this about her, but I figured not these ones, right. And she said no, no, I always do, hillary, I always do my own lashes. Just let me do them. And I said OK, and I said, well, let me go. And I wanted to go and get the flat iron and bring it back in. I said let's just all smooth a few little things right before you walk out the door. And as I walked back into the bathroom, I looked at her and I had to go downstairs and grab it and come back up. And I looked at her and she had picked up the nail glue instead of the eye glue and she'd put her eyelashes on with nail glue.

Oh no.

And I just stood there and I blinked and she looked at me and she said what? And that you know, mind you, everything laid out for her tweezers eyelash glue, everything. And I just looked at her and I said, ah, are your eyes okay? Because she had a very sensitive eyes and she said they're fine. She said they're fine, they're great. And I looked at her and I said okay, but you need to blink. I need to see if, like you, know how your lid is creasing and all of this. And la, la, la, and I said did you use this glue? And she said yeah. And I said do you okay? Are your eyes are okay? She said yes. She said, hillary, I do use nail glue on my lashes when I wear the big fancy costume lashes all the time. I've been doing it for years.

I almost had a heart attack. Now I absolutely, under no circumstances, recommend this for anyone. Ever, ever, ever. It's a terrible idea. You never want to get that in your eyes. To this day. I can't believe it. But you know she'd been doing theater and things for decades. So I just my stomach dropped. I thought for sure. I thought for sure, like the beauty gods were just coming for me. I you can hear now, but she completely intended to do it and you know, okay, but I nearly fell off, fell just downstairs.

So definitely don't do that.

Speaker 2: 11:41

It's not something, it's dangerous. It's dangerous. It's dangerous for so many reasons.

Oh my gosh, that is so funny. And you're right, because you walk away, going home and was there a part of, or is there a part of you that went oh my gosh, I shouldn't have left. Maybe I shouldn't have left that glue there, and then it's like we get totaled on. Yes, yes, I can't believe we had responsibility.

Yes, yes, I mean. Well, I'm so organized. It's like everything has its own little station, everything has its own little like. You know, I'm an esthetician, so we send up like SMAs, so everything has its own little sanitary station and you know. So you know what goes with what you know. So it's like there was really no real mistaking it. But no, she totally meant to do it. But, yes, of course, I thought, holy moly, this is my fault. I have totally like left the scene and my client has used nail glue to put our eyelashes on. This is all my fault and but it was completely intentional. She was like no, when I do these big, heavy ones, I just have to use the nail glue. I left, glue just doesn't hold them up and I just thought, wow okay, oh my gosh.

Well, you know, I'll tell you what. That's. A scary thought in itself, because I know what it's like. You know with different glues, and then you have to wonder how in the world do you get that off? You know, it's so like I get a little nervous when I'm using, like crazy glue or something like that?

Yes, I know, I know. No one should ever do it.

I know it was funny, my grandmother. I remember one time this is when I was a kid and I learned this a long time ago my group, we were out, my grandmother was doing something and she was using the crazy glue and she glued her fingers together with a crazy glue?

Yes, you can glue your eye shut. Yeah, yeah, and I was like, but I did discover now this is not good either. I mean, so please hear me out with this. You don't ever put this near your face or your eyes. She had to use nail polish remover to get to, and even then that took a long time, you know. So some of this yeah, these are things you don't want to put into your eyes. Yes, right right.

Speaker 2: 13:41

No, I mean she had a whole process that she did it. I mean she was fast, fast. I mean she's an old theater broad, so she was quick, quick, quick, you know. But yeah, I'm not gonna share that with anyone because I don't want anyone doing it Exactly? Yeah, yeah, yeah, that idea.

Yeah, yeah, that is awesome. That is awesome. Yeah, well, you have an incredible life because I know you travel and you do so many things and you work with so many people and you help a lot of people. I know, you know your heart is as big as your body and you're always doing some fun stuff.

But yeah, and it's always a delight to talk to you because you've got such an upbeat and fun personality and that's why I wanted to have you on, because it's just kind of fun to connect and have a cup of coffee with you and just talk about anything, something and nothing. So what do you got planned now? I know you just got back from Vegas and I know you've been working in Beverly Hills and what else you got going on at this time?

Speaker 2: 14:41

Oh, it's so fun. You know it's so fun I did. I just got back from a trade show, one of the largest trade shows for beauty that goes globally. So I was able to make it to Vegas, which is great. It's nice to see innovation. It's also nice to talk. You know I attended a lot of the education. It's particularly around SPF and SPF technology. So it's really great to, you know, learn from your own peers and to get to spend time with some of your own peers because you can chitchat before and after. You don't get to see each other that often because everybody's busy. You know we're all doing our thing, so it's nice to get to see each other when we're, you know, presenting for trade shows or talking or doing anything like that. It's always fun. It was great I'm doing that. I'm just really enjoying seeing my clients again.

I was so involved in product development for so long. I still, of course, travel, see my celebrity and my private clients, but now that I am taking clients by appointment and Beverly Hills, I just can't tell you, mickey, how delighted I am to get to touch and feel people and share energy with them again. For example, one of my clients came in yesterday with her daughter who's 10. I forgot how much I love working with young women. When I had blush beauty in San Francisco, my clients would always bring their daughters to me to learn makeup and skincare for the first time. We called it first blush and it was a whole intro into makeup, and some of them are still with me now that they're into their 20s. I just had forgotten the magic of working with she's young and because of YouTube and Tik Tok and everything else, these little ones have been watching makeup tutorials since they were some of them four and five and six.

She looked at me and said oh, I need a new eyelash curler because mine is worn out and broken. I looked at her and I thought you have an eyelash curler I mean really. She said well, I said actually, you might just need to replace the bumper, you might just need to replace the curl pad. She looked at me and I said which? What brand is your eyelash curler? She looked at me and she said it's the same as yours, but it's Rose Gold. I thought that's fancy. Mine is this one here is Shiseido. Okay, you're using a good curler. Good for you.

He started out well. I said to her just go on Shiseidocom or go on Amazoncom. You can buy a new pad. You don't have to buy the whole new roller curler it's unless they get misaligned. You can do that. I've been enjoying working with people again and I just love it. I think I'm going to continue to remind my clients that it's never too early. Well, within reason, it's always good to get people started with skincare and makeup a little bit early, because I'm just really delighting in working with the younger generation and they teach me so much too.

That is really fun. And you're right, I think sometimes it changes. I should say I think sometimes it changes. I know it changes because I know, even just from being a teenager, then into my 20s and then as I've evolved I'm going to say evolved in age my makeup has changed, it's different, your skin changes and your eyes change.

Your skin texture changes, learning right from the beginning, but then knowing what to do as these things change and make a difference, to have you be able to guide them and show them what works best and to enhance always enhance and do what's in their comfort zone. You're absolutely right. I guess you don't think about that, because I know there's a lot of friends and even family members that I know are still wearing the same makeup they wore that I've known when they were in their 20s. While blue eyeshadow can be an enhancement, I think sometimes you maybe got to have to have a little bit of guidance to help you make it so it looks the way it should for you with the timeframe that you're in. Am I saying that correctly? I'm being diplomatic.

You're always being diplomatic. Yes, things just change. Your skin tone changes. One of the things that people come to me the most with is my eyeliner is just not the same. I used to be able to wear this beautiful cat eye, or I used to be able to wear this eye, and now it's like my cat eye is taking a dive, the way you're pointing down. I'm like I get it. Our lids change, our faces change, so the architecture, the face changes, and sometimes it's just a difference in placement or a simple difference in texture, and it's really easy and often, as we mature, less is more, and that's one of the things that we don't realize. And I've learned myself. I mean, I'm 48 now and I'm seeing so many changes and I'm like, oh okay, gosh, I really I don't really care for that look that I used to love then. But this is a version of it and it takes sometimes it takes even me a few times to play with it and even take photos, because I'm on camera occasionally to really see what works. So it's totally normal that you come in and I see clients all the time that some come in once a year, some come in once a month because they just wanna hang out. Some come in every five years.

It's with different life changes, and they're like all right, I'm ready for an update. Things are changing or people have people are starting to notice that their eyes are drooping, or they have more of a hooded lid, which is beautiful too, and people don't realize that there's a huge beauty and a hooded lid too. Some of the biggest stars and celebrities and some of the women that we consider most beautiful actually had hooded lids. So don't let social media tell you it's a bad thing. How are people just have lid surgery or they've just had face lifts or neck lifts and they're like I've got a brand new face. What do I do? So it's all of it.

Well, I do. I love the fact that you can find the beauty in everybody, and because you work with so many different people and you can see the differences and know the way to enhance all that, which is amazing. And that is what we need to do, because we always wanna feel beautiful. We always wanna feel good.

And that's just something. And doing makeup is just like you said. It's so, it's personal, it's intimate and you wanna walk away feeling, oh my gosh, I look amazing, I feel good. I feel good and what a gift that you have that you're able to do that and see that in people and bring that to them and change their life and change their world. Because you walk away and you're like, oh my gosh, it feels magical. I mean I guess that's the only way I can put on it is when you do a really good makeup and you walk away and your makeup looks nice and your hair looks nice, you feel stunning. It's just that internal lift that just you walk away with.

Yeah, and I know that's what you bring. So it's gotta be so rewarding to see someone come in and then leave and just and give that ability to lift them up internally. It's not just on the outside. That's one of the things I love about what you do and who you are, because I can hear the passion and the kindness and the desire when you talk about what you do and I'm sure when you're working with clients they can feel and see the same thing.

There's nothing more magical than when a client walks out and you can tell they walk out differently than they walked in, not because of what's on their face or what's how their hair is done, but the way they carry themselves and they feel empowered and more in touch with who they are and they remember that they're powerful and creative and beautiful human beings that have all this life force to go out there and share with other people and that they're just, they're invincible and they're unique in their very own way. And sometimes it's just so ironic that it's the stuff we put on top that reminds us about the stuff that's on the inside and that's what really matters. But it's kind of my sneaky way of being able to do just a little bit of good in the world and make people feel good. That's really. All we want is to experience love and to have self love and taking care of ourselves. You know, it's a really it's a roundabout way of getting to all the good stuff.

No, it is awesome because there's a huge facet to it. There's a lot to it. So, no, I love it. I think that's awesome. I think it's awesome. Why would I expect anything different from you? What was that? And you get to sprinkle them throughout the year. I love it.

So on a scale from one to 10, how good of a driver are you? Who depends?

on who you talk to. Well, you know we're all still here. Let's just say that I think I'm a very good driver. I learned to drive a stick shift in the hills of San Francisco, so I think I'm very proficient and I did quite well on the auto bond. But my husband does not agree.

He tends to be right about a lot, so Okay, and last question who was your first celebrity crush? I don't know.

I'll tell you mine, but you know what it's definitely going to so much me. My first celebrity crush was Bobby Sherman. Do you remember Bobby Sherman? Bobby Sherman, no, who's Bobby Sherman? Bobby Sherman, oh my gosh, I was a kid, I mean, I was really little. Bobby Sherman was an artist, he was a music artist and I kid you not, I had a life. Isn't that amazing?

I had a life-size poster.

that they did I had a life-size poster that came with his album. That used to be in my bedroom. Oh my God, you know what's so funny. I looked him up and do you know that he went on to be a paramedic and I think he's in Rosita, I think him in his wife lived.

Oh isn't that amazing?

Yeah, I think I did, because I looked it up just for the heck of it to see whatever happened to him. Yeah, he's actually, I think he actually teaches paramedics or firemen or something, and he's yeah, he went on to do that. And it is so funny Because I downloaded some of his songs and you go back and listen to him now when you're an adult and you're like, oh my gosh, this was my favorite, so I got it. So think of somebody. There's got to be somebody. You just have to.

Well, the first person that actually comes to my mind I actually work with now, so I can't say, because it's too embarrassing, he has no idea, so I can't even say that. Fair enough, isn't that?

terrible, fair enough. Well, yeah, he was so funny. And now I look at it back then and there's a couple of them that I just I was like, oh my gosh, they were so cute. And then you look at it and you wonder, and there's a couple that I just you think of like Bon Jovi and you're like, oh my gosh, he's still attractive. And there's a couple that you still see. But yeah, isn't that funny? And then as you grow up, you're like, well, they're just people doing a job Right.

But you just, you never know. Yeah, they're just people doing a job, right.

And they're just down to earth and I've had an opportunity to meet with some incredible people that you looked at when you were a kid and you sit and have a real conversation with them and you're like this is really cool. And just to understand, I honestly I'm not so starstruck. I mean, I'm really not. You know what gets me? Because I coach football. I get so tongue tied and stupid when I'm around NFL players. I don't know what.

Because that's what I do. I coach it. I mean, it's been my world. So when I meet an NFL player, I don't want to sound like an idiot. You know and you don't know. If you want to talk about football, I can sit in a room. I can go to Gallows and Beverly Hills. I can be around some of the biggest celebrities, have a normal conversation, could care less, walk out on a football field and I'm an idiot.

You know, I have to say that's absolutely true, because there are Yep, there are definitely makeup artists that I think. I think I'd be much more nervous about that then, because I don't really get starstruck either. It's just, I think, because we do it so often and we live in Southern California and I see them in their bathrooms and they're underwear. But there are certain artists, and I would say designers, that just I would get a little like ah over. But I will say Rita Moreno definitely had that star power and I wasn't. I was, yeah, maybe I was a little starstruck when I worked with Rita, but she was just so kind and accommodating and such a pro, but I definitely knew that I was in the presence of. You know, she might not say Hollywood royalty, but she definitely had that air about her, that old Hollywood royalty.
